We both completely fell for Kaikoura - a coastal town just north of Christchurch which is teeming with marine life. A deep drop in the ocean floor unusually close to the shore brings amazing sea mammals like sperm whales, killer whales and huge pods of up to a thousand dolphins to the area.
On our first day we took a walk on the outskirts of town and stumbled across a family of seals and their pups playing in a waterfall. We watched as they splashed around completely oblivious to us being there.


We also took a boat trip out to see the dusky dolphins and found a pod of about 300 just ten minutes from the beach. They seemed to love catching a free ride on the waves in front of the boat and played around with people who got into the sea to swim.
