Athens Hotel review: Hotel Rio Athens
All three desk agents we talked to were very helpful; one spoke excellent English. The room was small but had everything we needed, including free shampoo and a mini-fridge. It was in a quiet neighborhood, 4 metro stops from the Acropolis or about a 30-40 minute walk to Plaka. Very comfortable. We needed a cab at 4 a.m. and they organized this for us. I would definitely stay there again.

Thessaloniki Hotel review: Alexandria Hotel
We encountered three desk agents during our stay; only one had basic knowledge of English. It was falsely advertised on Travellerspoint that this hotel offers breakfast - they do not. The toilet hadn't been cleaned when we checked in and it didn't flush very well. Otherwise, the room and sheets were clean. Our room was directly on the main street and there is a bus stop directly outside, so it was a bit loud, but we slept fine. The room was tiny; we could barely fit our two bags inside. The place has a dive feel to it, but it has everything the budget traveller needs (bed, shower, toilet), especially if you don't intend to stay in your room for anything else but sleeping and showering. Good location - very close to shops and downtown. Good price too, though I thought I was going to get breakfast!
