To kick off my cheap (or better yet free!) summer in Vancouver, I thought I'd start with a bike ride along the Iona Beach jetty. With its perfectly flat, 2.5 mile projection into the middle of the ocean, the jetty makes for an easy ride on the wobbly winter legs. Although you ride (or walk if you prefer) directly on top of a treated sewage pipe, the surrounds are west coast wild! A climb up the lookout at the end of the spit made me feel a little Kate Winslet circa Titanic. The ocean, birds and the occasional plane taking off made this summer cyclist feel as if the season had been properly inaugurated.
