We leave Aleppo and head to Krak de Chevalier (listed by LP as the finest crusader castle in the world) and I’m already disappointed. The photographs I’ve seen of the castle made it look like a scene straight from a movie, however, on arrival, the plethora of unsympathetic restaurants, apartments and mish-mash of other tacky faux castle-esque buildings completely ruin the atmosphere. We have a quick lunch in the Panorama Castle restaurant. Quick mainly because I can see the old woman killing the chickens out back and whilst she’s doing said killing, her husband is trying to ‘sell’ us the lemon chicken for lunch. In fact, it is the only option. We go with humus and salad instead and tell him we’re vegetarian. So far this trip we’ve been Jewish, vegan, vegetarian and both had allergies to seafood that could send us into anaphylactic shock.
