Roads have improved considerably and driving from San Jose to Quepos has few obstacles. The main one remains between Atenas and Orotina, a bendy descent, where one can be slowed down to a trickle by underpowered and overloaded trucks. Also the old bridge at Parrita (one way) has not yet been replaced by the new one under construction.
Be careful of speed limits, particularly between Jacó and Parrita, and do NOT pay to the invariably present Traffic Police, if you happen to be fined.
Manuel Antonio is reasonably quiet these days, with plenty of parking space next to the park entrance, which is also convenient when exiting the parc.
Hotels are having a hard time to fill beds and most are willing to lower their rates, except on public holidays.

It's in the center of Costa Rica, near airports and excellent public transport, that I propose a starting point (base camp) from where to discover the country's fascinating attractions. The Pacific and Atlantic coasts are a mere 2 hours' drive away, whereas many easy daytrips allow for discovering the country's fauna and flora, its volcanoes and national parks, and practice rafting, mountain biking, bungee jumping , hiking, and so on. There are many culturally interesting and reasonably priced places off the beaten track where to stay. And if your goal is to learn Spanich, here's where the better institutions are located.
