Hindsight is 20/20, they say. This past May (2009) we spent 6 nights in the Sacred Valley region of Peru for under $1400 (airfare from Charlotte NC USA included), and it would have been easy (very easy) to drop $400 off of that figure. We didn't scrimp or do without, we didn't miss any major sites, we didn't even bargain for the few small gifts we brought back with us.
Just the opposite. In Ollantaytambo we hired a car and driver for half a day. We took a full day tour out of Cusco and used the same company to buy our train, bus and entry tickets to Machu Picchu for us. We even had a guide while visiting Machu Picchu itself. We could have done all of that on our own and saved quite a bit.
