Kuala Lumpur Hotel review: Dorsett Regency Hotel Kuala Lumpur
This hotel was average, our stay here was pleasant and the rooms were both clean and spacious, the shower and mattress was also good. I did request a non smoking floor but it appears that most of the hotel allows smoking so those rooms were subject to availability and are therefore numbered. I did ask reception about an available non smoking room but they said this wouldn't be an option until a possible check out the next day at 2pm. We were there just the three nights so it didn't bother me to much. The facilities were a bit of a downfall. But the staff were friendly. There are plenty of taxis hanging around, especially with the Carlton Ritz next door, we walked alot and the Jalan Imbi and Bukit Bintang monorail stops were just a short stroll. You would be better catching a taxi to further places including KL Sentral. I found the taxis here very cheap and though I felt we were probably ripped off on one occasion, paying 15 ringitt to get to the Hard Rock Cafe from the hotel and just 5 ringitt on the way home, it generally cost 5 ringitt to get to places in the city but sometimes more if you have baggage. Always ask for a price before hoping in.
In all, maybe a bit expensive I reserved the room for three nights at 684 ringgitt but payed over another 100 for taxes/charges upon check out. Not really a budget hotel for Malaysia.
Singapore Hotel review: The Royal Peacock Hotel
I stayed here for 3 nights in mid April 09'. I wouldn't recommend this hotel, though I couldn't suggest another place. I liked the Chinatown location, close to both Outram Park and Chinatown MRT stops. The room was on the ground floor, it was very large but there was little light and the bathroom was in need of a make over. The shower had little pressure and went cold quickly. There was no shower curtain all the way around so a large puddle formed every time. On the second morning I mentioned the shower's condition to reception who said they will take a look at it so I went out sightseeing for the whole day hoping to return to take a nice refreshing shower, after I returned the shower was still not fixed. Instead I hopped on their free internet (before anyone else could bet me as there was just the one slow computer) and went back to my room to find someone there fixing it at nearly 5 in the afternoon. They only replaced the shower head so there was not much improvement in pressure and nothing in the temperature. The price had breakfast included, but it was below average. Baked beans were about the best thing unless you like bland French toast or watered down chicken porridge, I have had nicer breakfasts out in the middle of Western Australia at a pub/hotel/post office. The next two mornings I helped myself to the orange juice only.
So in all, for the price this hotel offers no value or real assistance.
Penang Hotel review: Tune Hotels Downtown Penang
I was a bit hesitant to arrive here, what with such amazing prices. I stayed at Tune Hotel with my partner for 3 nights in mid April 2009. The hotel room is small (we placed two large suitcases on the floor between the bed and window out of the walkway) but very clean and you could ask nothing more for the price. After all, we were only sleeping there so the space was not a problem. You have your own toilet and a great shower. The room is cleaned well. And the facilities and location were convenient (New World Park - an eatery is right next door). Layla spa was very relaxing, we paid roughly 45 ringitt for a hour foot spa and the coffee on level 2 we commented about how nice it was. There is also a 7/11 and another restaurant at the front of the building. It looks as though more retail is yet to open up. This hotel only opened April 1st 09' and therefore my only concern is that the quality of the rooms will not be maintained over time. Let's hope not, I would recommend this place after paying more in neighbouring cities this was by far the best.
P.S Don't forget to purchase airconditioning, though I think you can do so when checking in. You will need it.
