Shanghai Hostel review: MINGTOWN People's Square Youth Hostel

When we stayed (October 2009), there were a few problems with our room; leaking ceiling, no air conditioning (when the website said this was included), bathroom door locked itself when you shut it from the outside. We are also fairly sure we saw a rodant in the bar area! However, the staff were really, really friendly and helpful and the sheets were clean, bed comfortable etc. and I believe the hostel is due to be done up so it is worth looking at. The location is pretty good too and there is a washing machine on site which is very handy if you're traveling like us!
Worth it for the helpful, friendly staff!

Xi'an Hostel review: Shuyuan International Youth Hostel

We stayed in one of the budget dorms in the basement, which was ok but a little damp smelling and dusty. If we were to stay again, we would ask for one of the rooms upstairs as these seemed to be a little better, although they were more expensive (approx. 10yuan more per person, per night).

Some of the staff were really, really helpful and nice, but some were not so attentive. I think it is pot luck whether you get good service, depending on which member of staff you ask, but you soon learn who is helpful so it's not so bad. The food in the restaurant is very expensive. You obviously don't need to eat in the hostel though, and there were many more lovely and very cheap restaurants within walking distance, and street food vendors in the Muslim quarter, also within walking distance, so it does not have to cost much at all to stay here.

This is a fantastic place to meet other like-minded travelers. I can only speak from my personal experience, but for 2 of our 3 nights we went out for a meal with big groups of 8-10 people because the communal areas made it so easy to talk to and get to know other people; this is what I liked most about this place.

I would stay again to save money on accommodation and to meet other people.
