It seems rather strange to write about the Amazon from the comfort of the luxury apartment I’m living in Buenos Aires at the moment. It also seems quite impossible that these to locations are part of the same continent, the same world.
I left Tarapoto, and its quiet atmosphere, at 4am in a shared taxi heading to Yurimaguas, the town I was catching the first boat to begin my sailing time in the Amazon River. The road to Yurimaguas was started to be paved few years ago, but in Peruvian time that normally takes a while, so we were driving in concrete for few kms, and then back to gravel for another few. I tried to get some sleep, but the proximity of the other 2 men I was sharing the back seat with, together with the bumps in the road, was making the task rather difficult. Also at some point, the thickest fog ever, decided to come down from the mountains to join us for the ride.
