New York Hostel review: Lafayette International Guesthouse

Had a great time! Comfy beds, nice showers (though not the cleanest), great kitchen, friendly staff, good location in East Harlem near subway. Free internet and phone calls are awesome.

Please don't go here if you're scared of black cats

Boston Hostel review: YMCA of Greater Boston

The room was nice and clean, but the showers and bathrooms were disgusting. The receptionists we talked to were neither friendly nor helpful and would not refund the money we overpaid because they put us in the wrong room: "If you had read our terms and conditions you would have known that we don't give refunds." Luggage room was unlocked half the time.

The location is very good, about a minute's walk from the streetcar stop. Also free use of the internet and fitness equipment (didn't try though). Pretty cheap if you're in a group of 3 - 4 people.
