Florence Hotel review: Hotel Masaccio
A small and decent budget hotel, with good value for the money.
We stayed two nights in a double room from the 17th to the 19th of September 2009. We payed 76€, nothing in advance (I think).
Location:
The hotel is located just out of the historic city of Florence. It is 1.5 km from the Duomo (la cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore), which is a 20 minutes walk. It is 2.3 km away from the Santa Maria Novella train station, about a 30 minutes walk, or a 15€ cab ride (In the daytime for two). There is a bus stop close to the hotel, with lines going past the Duomo and the Santa Maria Novella train station (at least bus lines 11 and 17 and I think also 20). The Via Masaccio is quite heavy trafficated, so if you are troubled by noise you should ask for a room away from the street.Room:
The hotel is rather small, with only nine rooms. The rooms have an all right standard for a budget hotel, and are equipped with shower and a sink, but with shared toilets. There are two toilets to share. The shower wasn't new or spacious but worked fine. During our stay there was trouble with clogging on one of the toilets, which wasn't exactly appetizing. But I hope this was a temporary problem, and at least there was a second toilet next to the reception.Restaurant/breakfast:
There was a small restaurant service in the hotel, with simple and cheap food. There was a very small breakfast for 5€ a person, but it wasn't much to write home about. A croissant with coffee, and rolls or dry crackers with yam or butter cheese. There was a supermarket 300 m to the right on Via Masaccio where you could get a better breakfast for a quarter of the price, and eat it in the park next to the bus stop for example.Internet:
There was free wireless internet in the hotel (free-hotspot.com), and you gat a card with a login code from the reception to get access.Service:
The manager greeted us, and he was very friendly and spoke well English. Others have reported various English speaking abilities with other reception staff, but for us it was not a problem. The reception is only staffed until 20.00, and you get keys to the main doors to get in after that. Check-out is before 10.00.Conclusion:
This is a budget hotel, but you get good value for your money. It is a small walk or bus trip to the hotel from the sights and attraction, but if you plan your trip and don't mind walking a bit, then it's no problem. The standard is OK and the facilities are acceptably clean and in order (except for the toilet during our stay, which was clogged and full of shit). We could definately stay here again.
Rome Guesthouse review: Anfiteatro Flavio B&B
A hotel with all right standard and service in a very good location, close to the attractions and in a decent and calm neighbourhood.
We stayed two nights from the 15th to the 17th of September 2009. We stayed in the double room 'Tacito' on the ground floor. We payed 160€, with 10% in advance.
Location:
The location is great, just some hundred meters from the Colosseo. The hotel doesn't have a restaurant (they serve only breakfast), but there are many restaurants close to the hotel. The street the hotel is in is pretty quiet, especially for Rome, and the area felt safe.Room:
The room had a decent size, with a real double bed, not just two singles. The room had a window out to a very small kind of terrace/courtyard, from where other reviewers have reported noise and lack of privacy. We did not experience this problem, and was not troubled by noise. It isn't really a terrace to sit in, but just a small open space to let light in. There are also some shutters on the window, so privacy shouldn't really be a problem. There is AC in the room as well, wich worked properly and without too much noise. There are several closets where you can hang your clothes. The bathroom was OK but not perfect. The shower was not very new, and seemed like it was installed by an amateur (much silicone around the fixtures). Not too big either, but it worked.Breakfast:
The breakfast was served from 7.30 to 9.30 I think. The breakfast was good, with rolls, cheese, ham, salami, yam, yoghurt, cereals, juice and a small coffee-bar. The selection of croissants and cakes was enormous. The service was impeccable.Internet:
The hotel did not have wireless internet, but had a computer in the breakfast area with internet connection. Fifteen minutes a day for each room was free, and you had to pay for access exceeding that. I think they wanted 2€ for half an hour or something.Service:
The reception was staffed 24 hours a day, and the service was good, and the reception staff spoke well English. Check-out time was 10.00.We had a nice stay and could recommend this hotel to other travellers. We didn't check very much around, so I can't say how the price is for a hotel in Rome, but I think it has an OK price.
