India

I volunteered in Madurai for 2 months and traveled to Kerala, Kodikanal, Kanyakamari. I recently spent 1 month in Delhi, visited Agra and the Taj Mahal and spent 1 month in Dharamsala teaching Tibetan refugees.

Malta

I spent 1 month in Malta and visited the sister island, Gozo. There is a youth hostel there (5 or more branches in many cities) where you can volunteer for your room and board. Malta is easy to get around with great public transport and friendly people.

Nepal

I spent 3 months in Kathmandu, Nepal. There are lots of opportunities to volunteer and it is inexpensive to just hang out. The people are welcoming. The Buddhist temples are numerous. The city is polluted but still one of my favorite places.

Romania

I spent 1 month in the northern town of Siret near the Ukraine border. I helped out in an orphanage. I learned the language enough to get by. Most of the locals don't know any English. The trains are great. Brasov is an easy city. The countryside is beautiful and the food good. Bucharest is worth visiting with wide boulevards (similar to Paris).

Turkey

Turkey is a great place to get around by train. Went from the South to Istambul, to Ankara, Ephesius. The people are very friendly and because of the inflation rate, very inexpensive for us (unfortunate for Turkey).

Thailand

I spent 2 months in Thailand in the summer of 2003. I began my trip in Ayuthaya seeing the Historical Park. I traveled by train to Phitsanulok. I enjoyed the riverside park where they offer outside aerobic classes for all ages. It is a great walking town with lots to see and do. Then I went to Phrae on the way to Chiang Mai where I stayed for 1 month and taught English to 2 men from the Disabled Center, a community that encourages business ownership. Check it out online. Then on to Hua Hin, a beachside resort where the King and Queen live. Then Kanchanaburi to see the Bridge on the River Kwai. Bangkok was an enjoyable city with river travel to anyplace you want to go. My budget was $100 USD a week but it could be done for much less. Eating street food and fruit is safe in Thailand.

Hong Kong

spent 1 week in hong kong in feb 2004. see lantau island with the large buddha. enjoy the view from victoria peak after the ride up on the scary funicular railway. enjoy the ferry rides across the river to Kowloon.

Macau

spent 1 week in macau. enjoyed the feel of this portuguese country. the food is wonderful and the old ruins are a must.

Vietnam

spent 1 month in north vietnam in 2/2004 in Hanoi, Hue and Hoi An. Also took day trips to Halong Bay, Danang DMZ and marble mountain.

Malaysia

Traveled to Georgetown, Penang, Kuching,Borneo and the Genting Highlands (called the city of entertainment) in April 2005 for 3 weeks.

Italy

Sorrento - Stayed at Domus Porto Salvo Hotel which is an abbey with several monks still living on the premises. It is a great location for day trips around the Naples/Amalfi area. Visited Pompeii, Ercolan, Positano, Amalfi, Isle of Capri. The room was comfortable and spotless. Great staff (english speaking and helpful) and free computer use 24/7. Very nice breakfast included. It is the perfect spot overlooking the Bay. I could easily have been happy there for a 2 week stay with day trips around the Campania area. I didn't have time to see every city I had hoped to unfortunately. The public transportation was easy and inexpensive. It is a good spot for the physically challenged. The hotel has been adapted although I would let them know in advance.

Italy

Isle of Ischia...Stayed at Hotel Coralba in Casamicciola. Great location. Spotless garden room. Friendly owner named Antonio who speaks perfect English and was helpful in showing me around and giving me tips about getting around by bus. Highly recommend Ischia and Hotel Coralba for a 1 - 2 week stay. There is enough to do in the 6 different villages to keep you occupied and Casamicciola is a great location for day trips all around the island. The views are beautiful and the food was fabulous and not expensive as I had expected after visiting Capri. The hotel has the capability to accommodate physiically challenged visitors but would let the staff know in advance what your needs are. Although the island is quite hilly there is a bus stop just outside the hotel entrance to take you down to the flat area where the public transportation is located.

Italy

Orvieto in Umbria. Great walled city high above the plains. Funicular train takes you to the Duomo by connecting bus. Easy city to walk although it is quite steep in places. Very pedestrian friendly and lots to see and do. Great food. No easy day trip to surrounding cities unfortunately
