Kyoto Hostel review: RokuRoku

Roku roku provides a gentle introduction into busy Kyoto. Located in a leafy green area of town, it's some distance from the centre but very close to a number of the temples and gardens. It is well-located for supermarket, boulangerie and other basic services but the restaurants in the area were not very appealing. Note that the bedrooms are located at some distance - about 300m - from the building where the kitchen facilities are located. We did not feel very welcome in this part of the property and the hours we were allowed to use it seemed to be quite limited and needed to be pre-arranged. In other words, if you're looking for a clean and comfortable place to sleep, Roku roku is very pleasant, but if you're planning on cooking for yourself or having some fun talking to other travellers, this is not the place for you. One nice bonus was the free bike hire. There are seven bikes at the property which always seemed to be enough for those wanting to use them each day.

Hiroshima Hostel review: J-Hoppers Hiroshima Trad Guesthouse

This is a very friendly hostel run by fellow travellers who are keen to make visitors feel at home. Our double room was spacious, clean and nicely decorated in a traditional Japanese style. In fact this was my favourite room in my entire Japanese holiday. My only complaint was hauling my luggage up to the 4th floor but I guess someone has to do it. The hostel is extremely well-located for visiting the Peace Park and Memorial - the main reason for visiting Hiroshima.

Hida Takayama Hostel review: J-Hoppers Hida Takayama Guesthouse

After a very enjoyable stay at J-Hoppers Hiroshima we decided to try J-Hoppers Takayama. We found the staff at this hostel just as helpful and friendly as those at Hiroshima. It seems the staff are carefully selected for being tuned into other travellers needs - even those of us who are a bit older! Our double room was very nice, the bathrooms were clean and the kitchen was functional and well-equipped. Highly recommended.
