I have been browsing through the records held on the orphans of Snehalaya, with the intention of getting better acquainted with their history; that is to say, who they are and where they have come from. I have discovered that, as I suspected, there is, on the most part, very little known about these children, other than when and where they were admitted; be it at the mercy home or here at Snehalaya. What has struck me is that, for many of these children, it is almost as if their former lives never existed, as there are no details as to their identities prior to arriving at the orphanage. Their ages, if undisclosed, are, at best, an educated guess based on a medical examination report and, for some, they have been given new names where their birth name was unknown. This strikes me as incredibly sad. We who have such relatively secure and fortunate lives could not imagine what it is to be so insignificant as to have no known age or name. I wonder how most people would cope were they not
