About Utrecht:

Born in 1977 in Hulst close to the Belgian border, I now live in Utrecht, Holland, together with my girlfriend Eva. I work in Breda, combining a not so bad salary with about 11 weeks of holidays a year. That way I can travel several times a year, keeping my head clear...;-)

Hobbies:

Travelling, darts, cars, photography, reading, wine and dine and my girlfriend. Sometimes all these things can be combined of course. I have been to about 85 countries right now, hoping to visit dozens more in the near future.

Favourite places:

Namibia, East Africa, Southern Morocco, Outback Australia, New Zealand, Pitcairn Islands, North Korea, Southwest Bolivia, Northern Chile, Patagonia, Amazon Basin, Pantanal, Newfoundland, Dominica, Saba, Montserrat, Cuba, Syria, Lebanon, Georgia, Armenia, Iceland, Western Ireland, Norway, Switzerland.

Pitcairn to Henderson adventure

Posted by Utrecht | 22nd March 2009

Just a quick update on my travels to the most remote country in the world: it looks like we might visit Henderson Island after all. Jack the mechanic has been working on the boat for the last 5 or 6 days and it seems the engines are quite ok again. Well, you never really know but Kurt called me and asked me if I was ready to go on the luxury cruiser Bounty Bay haha...Austrian humor I guess. So we are leaving Pitcairn tomorrow morning, spend the next day wandering around Henderson Island (the island is a Unesco World Heritage Site by the way) to see some endemic bird species, do some snorkelling and what else comes up to do and see. We do come back to Pitcairn to pick up some food, booze and cigarettes though which the locals are buying for us tomorrow when a small cruiseship comes in.

Nothing much more to tell now, apart from my strenuous hike to the Highest Point and enjoying the magnificent views for the last time. We have

Manaus Hostel review: Hostel Manaus

I stayed here for 4 nights in total in June 2008. The hostel is located just east of the centre, a short walk away on a side alley. Positive aspects certainly are the breakfast and the opportunity of a double room with aircon which actually worked! Great place to meet fellow travellers and there is internet access for a small fee. There is also the option of having lunch for a small price as well. People were generally friendly, although not overly. Also the owner, although nothing negative about him, was very quiet and it seemed like he didn't really enjoy it that much. But all in all, a good cheap, clean facility with no real negative things about it. There is also an option of booking tours if you like.

Norway

Travelled through this magnificent country from the north cape to Oslo. It is my European favorite.

Namibia

I travelled by car independently in Namibia and now the top places, like fish river canyon, the coast, namib and kalahari deserts, etosha and places in between.

» Ask Utrecht a question about Namibia.

North Korea

One of the most bizar countries I have been to, ask for information if you want, about places but also about the rules in this country and how you manage to get there in the first place.

» Ask Utrecht a question about North Korea.

Syria

This is really a terrific country and I travelled here in 2005 so I have some recent information. Been to Aleppo, Damascus and Palmyra, but also to the less visited east: Deir ez Zor and south towards the Iraqi border.

Cuba

Travelled by car through this magnificent country of caribbean communism. Ask for information as much as you want. Visited Havana, Vinales region, Trinidad, Camaguey, Santiago de Cuba and Baracoa.

Chile

As it is one of my favorite countries, I know a lot of many places in Chile. Especially the northern and southern most parts have my interest: Atacama and Patagonia.

» Ask Utrecht a question about Chile.

Netherlands

I live in the Netherlands and have visited all provinces and most cities, like Amsterdam, The Hague and Rotterdam. Living in Utrecht, I know most about that province/city.

New Zealand

My first big trip I stayed for about a month in New Zeland, visiting most places except the Bay of Islands. So Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin, Rotorua, Taupo, Nelson, Westcoast (glaciers), the Fjords and southernmost part around Invercargill.

Georgia

Haven't spend that much time in Georgia, but I visited most nice places, like Gori, Tblisi, Batumi and the Kaukasus. As there are not so many travel helpers for Georgia, I will help as much as I can.

Lebanon

Before the israeli lebanese war I travelled most of the country in 2005. From Tripoli to Beirut, to Sidon, the Bekaa valley (zahle wine region) and to Bcharre and the Cedars.

Bolivia

Although I only visited the higher parts of the country (Altiplano) I can help you with this part, from Tupiza in the south to Copacobana in the north and all places in between.

» Ask Utrecht a question about Bolivia.

Armenia

I stayed about a week in this very small country, visiting most places of interest, like Jerewan, Lake Sevan and Echmiadzin.

Australia

I have travelled by car from Victoria to Darwin and spend some time in Queensland as well. Probably I can help you with some Outback questions and how to travel around by car.

» Ask Utrecht a question about Australia.

Brazil

I recently traveled to Brazil, but out of the main cities and far away from the beaches. If you are going to the Iguacu Falls, Pantanal and Amazon Basin on the other hand, I might be of some use to you!

Pitcairn Islands

Although independent travel to the Pitcairn Islands is impossible without your own yacht, I am probably one of only a few members here on travellerspoint that has been there. To the main island (Pitcairn) as well as both Oeno and Henderson Island (not to Ducie unfortuntely, the fourth one). The article in the travelguide is pretty complete, but if you have more questions, please don't hesitate to ask me personally.

Morocco

Travelled through the southern parts of this beautiful country, across deserts and mountains and along the coast and to Marrakech.
