Background -
The dry, undulating island of Sumba has the richest tribal culture in Nusa Tenggara, centred on a religious tradition called marapu.
Pasola is the name of ancient war ritual war festival by two groups of selected Sumbanese men. They riding their colorful decorated selected horses fling wooden spears at each other.
The Pasola festival occurs during February in Lamboya and Kodi. The main activity starts several days after the full moon and coincides with the yearly arrival to the shore of strange, and multihued sea worms – Nyale.
The general idea is that the more blood spilt during Pasola, the happier the spirits and the better the harvest.
Few holds are barred, injuries and sometimes deaths still occur.
Just missed the Pasola Festival in West Sumba back in 2007 so made sure we made it in Feb 2009.
Stayed at the Sumba Nautil resort which is a 5 minute drive from the battlefield and a 5 minute drive + 10 minute walk from the 7 a.m. beach cerem

The weather in Perth, Western Australia was blistering hot for summer, but Gillian and I were off to South America.
