Kota Kinabalu HOSTEL review: Kinabalu Mountain Lodge
Stayed here for 2 days. It's not as close to the park entrance as it looks on the map. About 2 km partly uphill so if you're planning to climb Mt. Kinabalu, you'll probably want to get the taxi both ways the day you start and finish the climb. Also you really really do need to pack something warm as the blankets are thin and aren't enough for the chilly nights and early mornings and you have to pay if you want extra blankets. Not a bad place to stay, I only wish it was a bit closer to the park/restaurants/buses. Other than that it was clean and the staff were helpful
Malacca HOSTEL review: Oriental Riverside Residence
Didn't get the "privilege "of staying here because my room, which I had pre-booked, was given to another traveler who walked in on the day of and happened to show up before me because I showed up a little later than the estimated time of arrival. Didn't even get my deposit back from them. Poor practice.
Singapore HOSTEL review: Betel Box Backpacker Hostel
Stayed here for a few nights in the female dorm. Although it is not in the heart of downtown, it's very easy to get anywhere with the great transportation system. The staff was, for the most part, very knowledgeable about things to do and how to get there (although some additional suggestions weren't overly helpful). It was fairly clean. Trash disappeared from the room daily, but I forgot to bring flip-flops and the showers always seemed a bit grimy. A/C is on a timer in the dorm from evening to morning, which wasn't a problem for me because I was out most of the day, but if you'd prefer a quiet afternoon in, it's best to stay in the lounge. There's also a hairdryer available which is often overlooked in other hostels. For breakfast, you get a voucher worth 3.9 SGD which you can bring downstairs to the bistro and redeem for a variety of breakfast options or get a discount on others. An enjoyable hostel.
Seoul HOSTEL review: Sunshine Guesthouse
Located very close to a subway station, I had a great night's sleep. The room was warm, pitch black, and absolutely silent at night. No nightlife disturbances :P Didn't get to check out any of the hostel facilities as I left early in the morning to catch a train, but the hostel staff was very friendly and welcoming.
Malacca HOSTEL review: Ringos Foyer Guest House
A great place to stay if you're on a budget. Good location right near historical Jonker Street. Rooftop bbq/meeting was great. Enjoyed my stay. Dorm beds could be improved, however.
Kuala Lumpur HOSTEL review: Rainforest Bed and Breakfast
Stayed here a total of 3 nights in the female dorm (3 individual beds, no bunks). It's a great hostel in a beautiful, unique, building. It's close to a monorail station, the Petronas towers, and a huge downtown shopping district. It's clean, has free breakfast, and free internet. I feel like i'm staying at a nice hotel while I've only paid for a dorm. The only thing that could be improved is the service/hospitality. You check in, get a card key, and that's it. No additional information or quick tour around the building. They do have some useful information about things to see as well as a free map, but you have to ask for it specifically.
Bangkok HOSTEL review: Siam Journey Guesthouse
A good location for a hostel as it's within a few minutes walk from the airport line. The staff was friendly and welcoming, and the place spotless and very nice. It's in a very quiet, residential area (just barely tucked away from the hustle and bustle), but if you're staying in the dorms, you'll be able to hear conversations from the lounge downstairs.
Kyoto HOSTEL review: Backpackers Hostel K's House Kyoto
Mostly clean and modern. There was a collection of trash beside my bed but that might've just been from the person sleeping on the top bunk. The whole building had a/c and it had a nice overall atmosphere. The lounge, kitchen, and laundry are all on one floor which makes it easy to meet other hostellers. It's within walking distance from Kyoto station and near a bunch of food places.
Tokyo Hostel review: Tokyo Backpackers
Very clean and convenient location but the fun factor was missing. Met a few locals staying here, but no other international travellers. Only interacted with the staff during check in and check out. It's a great place to sleep but not too great for socializing (at least while I was there). Great value for the price though.
Tokyo Apart-hotel review: Hotel MyStays Nippori
Stayed here for 2 nights. It's maybe 3 mins walk from Nippori JR station which makes it really easy to get to/from the airport as well as local sights. Clean, modern, and has a microwave, mini fridge, and tv. I'd stay here again
