It is the first day of Eid al-Adha in Kabul, Afghanistan and traffic congested as families make their way home to slaughter their goat, sheep or even cow to commemorate the willingness of Abraham (Ibrahim) to sacrifice his son Ishmael (Isma'il) as an act of obedience to God, before God intervened to provide him with a sheep— to sacrifice instead. This little girl stares from her window seat at me with suspicion, shortly before her mother pulls back her headscarf and gives a reassuring, kind smile of respect.
A young boy cleans the windows of my car while we wait in Kabul traffic. He should be in school, but makes a living on the streets, with a rag and rarely any water to support his entrepreneurship.
