Giraffes at the national zoo/park in Zignare.
This was a special photograph for me because I was close to the older women in the photograph. she died of health problems and the family invited me to stay with the family at the wake. They showed me this photograph and explained that it was the only one that they had of their parents together. At the time, I was trying to photograph the picture as to make copies for the other family members. However, what I love about this picture is that you can really see the affection between the old man and his wife. In this part of rural West Africa, you very rarely saw that as that most people of this generation were married through arranged marriages. But here you can really see how much they loved eachother.
This picture was taken in a tiny village in southern Burkina Faso. This performer found out on late notice that he would fill in for the regular mask dancer in a local celebration. However, lacking in many of the costume materials, he threw together what he had on hand. I thought this was representative of the 'Cava Aller' national moto, which loosely translates to 'it will work out one way or another'.
