This Saturday I visited Tai Kang Lu ("Lu" means road in Mandarin) and the famous Xintiandi area in the former French Concession area. I was referred to Tai Kang Lu by a friend of mine who thought I would like it. Tai Kang Lu is an artistic neighborhood characterized by its narrow streets, interesting shops, and international restaurants and cafes. The buildings are preserved in the old Shanghai style (stores on the bottom floor with living quarters above them), but revamped with the revitalized Shanghai art and night life scene. In many ways walking around the charming lanes in Tai Kang Lu reminded me of Europe with its narrow streets, out door eateries, and chic cafes. This was a great area to get away from the commercialism that encompasses much of the rest of Shanghai and to get a taste of something truly charming and unique.
