On Day 3
Having just witnessed the bier carrying at Lima's main cathedral, we went to Monasterio de San Francisco where they have all the bone-filled crypts. About to go in and this fantastic parade starts coming past the Monasterio (building in the background). This is only one pic of the colourful pageant, but the Death costume seemed to fit the day and venue.
Spent first night in camp at bottom of Colca Canyon, then spent the early part of the next day trekking along the bottom to this oasis. Lazed around and in the pool the rest of day. Needed the rest because at 3 a.m. the next morning, armed with torches, we climbed out of the canyon, and it was a KILLER!!!
Our guide was leading our group of 4 (3 Perth Aussies and 1 Canuck) into our first day of a 3 day hike in the Colca Canyon (reached by bus from Arequipa) when we passed a herd of gorgeous llamas. The ear tassles do the same function as cattle branding, namely showing who owns the animals. Another great day in SA.
Took trip from Puno to the reed islands of Los Uros. Commercialised, but what part of the planet isn't these days. Ate some reed roots (nice and slightly sweet), sailed on a reed boat (Thor Heyerdhal style) and bought a few postcards. Didn't get ROBBED at Puno bus station, surprisenly enough!!! Another great day.
