Ancient Corinth - Temple of Apollo

Ancient Corinth - Greece. The most notable ruin of ancient Corinth is the 6th-century BC Temple of Apollo, built on a hill overlooking the remains of the Roman marketplace (agora). Seven of the original 38 Doric columns still stand, and it is one of the oldest stone temples in Greece. The temple was eventually destroyed by earthquakes. ©2008 Jordan Kevrekidis

Ancient Corinth - Peirene Fountain

Ancient Corinth - Greece. The Peirene Fountain was the major source of water for ancient Corinth. The arched openings led to bowls carved in the rock where water collected. The fountain is named for Peirene, a woman who wept so hard when she lost her son that she finally dissolved into the spring that still flows here. The fountain was said to have been a favorite watering hole of the Pegasus, the winged horse who was the son of Poseidon, god of the sea, and the Gorgon Medusa. ©2008 Jordan Kevrekidis

Acropolis 05 Odeon of Herodes

The Acropolis of Athens, Greece The Odeon of Herodes Atticus is a stone theatre structure located on the south slope of the Acropolis of Athens. It was built in 161 AD by Herodes Atticus in memory of his wife, Regilla. It was originally a steep-sloped amphitheater wide with a three-storey stone front wall and a wooden roof, and was used as a venue for music concerts and had a capacity of 5,000. The audience stands and the orchestra (stage) were restored in the 1950s. Panathinaiko Stadium - Olympics Woman Marathon

Sunset at the Acropolis in the background. Also known as the Kallimarmaron, i.e. the "beautifully marbled") in Athens is built fully of white marble (from Mount Penteli) 2500 years ago. In ancient times it was used to host the athletic portion of the Panathenaic Games in honour of the Goddess Athena.
