Colossal Cave is dormant for the most part. Some rain does seep in here, so occasionally this formation still gets wet.
Between 1934 and 1938, the CCC constructed walkways, stairs, handrails and lights to make the cave easier for the public to tour.
This is Mom just as she started the Cave tour, still not sure she wants to go through the tour.
There are 363 steps on this tour, somehow she actually made it through all of them!
The Park offers three different levels of tours. The middle one (in terms of difficulty) requires climbing on ladders such as the one on the left and some crawling.
If you look carefully, you can see some of our tour group in the crack at the bottom. This gives you some idea of how large some of the openings are.
Dave, our tour guide, is on the lower left. He often used a flashlight to point out various formations.
This is an idea what some of the formations look like without the flash. Lighting was installed by the CCC in the 1930's, so the cave is never pitch black (unless someone pulls the plug!)
