The huge archway leads to an indoor,covered plaza wherebmerchants displayed their wares and ladies of the royal family shopped without leaving the huge sandstone fort centuries ago. The fort holds the royal residences, throne room, audience halls, stunning gardens and smaller summer palaces, and private, exquisite prayer chambers.

This is now a large field, but during WWII held many buildings used as housing (barracks?) for soldiers stationed at Fort Stevens
Some old military equipment is on display at the fort, especially near the Museum, including this searchlight. It was used during WWII to look for enemy aircraft at night.
