The huge archway leads to an indoor,covered plaza wherebmerchants displayed their wares and ladies of the royal family shopped without leaving the huge sandstone fort centuries ago. The fort holds the royal residences, throne room, audience halls, stunning gardens and smaller summer palaces, and private, exquisite prayer chambers.

This is now a large field, but during WWII held many buildings used as housing (barracks?) for soldiers stationed at Fort Stevens

Day 207 - Fort Stevens, Searchlight
Some old military equipment is on display at the fort, especially near the Museum, including this searchlight. It was used during WWII to look for enemy aircraft at night.

Day 207 - Fort Stevens, Old Shipwreck
This is all that's left of the Peter Iredale, a four masted British sailing ship that was wrecked on Oregon's coast October 25, 1906. All 27 crew and two stowaway's were rescued.

Day 207 - Fort Clatsop, Visitors Center
Fort Clatsop was built by the Lewis & Clark Expedition to stay in during the winter of 1805-1806. The Visitors Center has a very nice museum/interpretive area and a gift shop with such things as steel & flint fire starting kits, replica's of some of the items the expedition would have carried.

Day 207 - Fort Clatsop, Mom In Snow
Snow is very unusual here, so much so that the Rangers ran out with camera's to capture the moment. Mom borrowed an electric cart to tour the replica Fort.
