Mono Lake (ML) is one of the oldest lakes in the US. It is at least 760,000 years old. Surrounding streams carry minerals into the lake and evaporation removes water, making ML 10% minerals. This is why it is so easy to float in ML.
Tufas are formed when fresh water containing calcium bubble up through carbonate rich lake water. The combination results in calcium carbonate, a whitish limestone that is the basis for tufas.
Although no fish can live in ML, millions of brine shrimp thrive in the alkaline waters. Alkali flies thrive and migratory birds stop to feed on both.
