Mom couldn't believe all the flowers in bloom in mid-December
Mom & I purchased a small sweetgrass basket from this lady, then she was so sweet and gave Mom a second basket - and I forgot to ask her name.
She wanted to get south for the winter, looks like we succeeded
Now this is the life...
Mom's horse was named 'Ringo Star'.
Mom & JL riding horses on the beach
Ringo Star was a very sweet, gentle horse with a smooth gait, but I got a kick out of Mom riding one of the Beatles!
While driving south from the Hatteras Ferry terminal, we pulled over and decided to have lunch on the beach.
Mom is on the ramp to visit the Elizabeth II, a reconstruction of on of the boats that brought English settlers to the 'Lost Colony'
Mom isn't really afraid of snakes, but she had fun pretending. We did take this walk btw
Mom didn't think we'd ever leave VA, so was happy to finally see this sign. She like VA fine, but wanted to get farther south
The building in the far side is probably a little on the small side. The building on the right is probably a barn or work shed.
Our guide, Lindsay is letting us into the Fort. Henricus is the second permanent town founded in America by the English, although it only lasted from 1611 to 1622.
Lindsay is explaining how the Powhatan natives lived.
This house reflects how a farmer might have lived in early Henricus. It may be quite similar to the one John Rolfe and Pocahontas lived in.
Henricus was primarily a military outpost, so would have had a compliment of soldiers and armor.
The visitor center at Yorktown National Battlefield is by the British earthworks. There are several Revolutionary War era cannon positioned around the center.
We didn't start heading back from Historic Jamestown until dusk. Mom didn't let that stop her from collecting sand a little farther down the James River.
Mom walked about a block into Colonial Williamsburg, it was quite cold in spite of the sunshine.
It was a quarter mile walk from the parking to the lighthouse, a bit rough for Mom, but she made it!
The water here is naturally very black due to tannens in the water.
We are on the Chincoteaque National Wildlife Refuge, those are ponies behind us. Happy Thanksgiving!
Martha and Elenore were our guides while at the visitors center. I think they liked the sunny, warm weather as much as we did!
Most of the cooking was done downstairs. Mom was enjoying the variety of foods available on a 1700's plantation.
We stopped here because Mom had heard you could find fossels on the beach and wanted to look for some. It was quite cool however.
