Hiding from the rain under a shop awning in Waikabubak and saw this truck parked outside. Loved the hanging meat decoration!!!
A wet arvo at the town market and came across a number of well-trussed dogs waiting to be put in the pot. I think the dogs knew because they all looked so miserable.
Hired motorbike in Waikabukak and throttled over hill and dale down through Lamboya district to Marosi Beach for R & R. Only us on the whole beach, and this was the only tree on the whole beach. Locals will machete open a fresh coconut for your milky delectation and charge about 30 Oz cents (2000 Rup). Very little cloud cover, very hot, great surf out there and great fun. Local schoolkids waving madly and screaming 'Hello Mister' and 'Hello Missus'.
Coupla cool teenage Sumbanese guys on the bus/bemo from Waitabula to Waikabubak. They were so funny!!!
First view of the beach and it is gorgeous. Just us and a few local kids, and the water was so clear and refreshing compared to the beach at the Newa Resort on the north coast. So good we went back two days later.
The last Pasola festival was going to be held in this district of West Sumba but we couldn't stay to see it. Great scenery, lazy motor-biking through it and Marosi beach is where the ocean is in the background.
Just strolling around town and came across this little beauty. Couldn't get any info about it but it looks good on one of the main streets.
There are a number of traditional villages on the edge of town which were a 5 minute walk from our hotel. The stone tomb in Tanjung village was quite impressive, and the figure bears an uncanny resemblance to our Prime Minister John Howard!!!
Got back to the resort after a full day being motor-biked around the far west of Sumba and decided to soak the aching buttocks. Sitting on our own private beach and saw these young guys punt their dugout canoe round the headland. Thought it might be a decent photo. Put the camera down and was about to suggest to my wife that it was BINTANG time when there was a muffled thump offshore and a geyser of water hurtled into the air about 20 metres from the dugout. The little bastards were dynamiting the reef to catch fish, so that put a big damper on what had been a great day.
Driven to the fishing village of Pero on the SW coast where we wanted to check out the beach and have a swim. Went down to the river outlet to haggle with the locals for a boat to reach the beach and found a young man butchering a shark he had just caught. Twenty thousand Rup to be boated to the beach and back, and the ocean view was pretty specky.
The swimming beach is actually out of sight on the right of the photo, but this is a pic of the ocean from atop the small headland. Great surf out there and LP mentions something about surfers staying in the village. Lovely view.
This is a view of the grounds, beach and room (on the far right) with the island of Sumbawa in the distance. You can see Flores from the beach if you look to the east, so Komodo and Rinca (for the dragons) is very close.
Leaving Denpasar airport on Bali heading to Sumba on Merpati Air. Bound for adventure, as Sumba is basically undeveloped compared to even Sumbawa.
Walking along beach from Tuban to Kuta when came across this unfortunate dead fish, along with two others.
Coming back into Coral Bay from the mant ray trip. The scenery and water is gorgeous, but it's shower time then get the minibus to Learmonth for the flight home to Perth. Only 3 night/4 day trip but worth every dollar.
I am happy as bin Larry!!! We have been snorkelling with 1 manta ray, but I have just surfaced after having 3 of the big buggers gliding right beneath me in about 20-25 feet of water. Eh ba goom, you don't do that every day.
View of bay from lookout after another days' non-productivity. The big sand dune on the other side is where the reef shark nursery is.
Next snorkel stop after Oyster Bridge but nowhere as good. Getting ready to blast our way full throttle along 7 km Bateman Bay on the way home.
