These were near the Sage Creek area (gravel road) in Badlands National Park, South Dakota
There were several donkey's begging for food from the passing cars, this baby was off to the side.
We were surprised to find patches of prairie grass in the Badlands, and where Bison or Deer can get to them, they go there to eat also
There was far more life near the Badlands than I expected.
As we were driving towards the Badlands in South Dakota, we saw this fellow heading towards the water bin. He was just bellowing, not sure if it was at us, but it seemed like it was.
We saw a lot of wild donkey's in Custer State Park, South Dakota, including this fellow
OK - I'd better stop uploading deer pictures also
OK, maybe it seems silly to you that we post all these pictures of animals, flowers and scenery. My goal was to get out of the cities and strip malls and (re) discover how rural the country still is, so finding animals in the wild is part of my objective.
We saw far more cattle ranches, but thought we should show that they also grow sheep in Montana
After we left Billings, we continued to see large numbers of Prong Horn Antelope in both Montana and Wyoming. I estimate we saw at least 300 over the next day or so.
Saw this one in Montana
Imagine hundreds of these only yards apart scattered over acres - of course, we only saw the burrow openings (and the prairie dogs of course).
Mom was really facinated by this, the two types of animals didn't seem to mind each other.
This is at the Greycliff prairie dog town, the first one we came across. We have seen several since (in MT, WY, SD, and ND). They are about the size of Guinnee Pigs.
I think this is a hawk, but if there's a birder out there who can correctly identify it, please help. If not, maybe I'll get time to check the Audobon guide someday...
We saw a number of 'Open Range' signs along the highways of Montana. Driving South from St Mary's, we finally saw what they meant!
