BETTING ON IT. Young boys are placing bets during the Dummy Elephant Festival in Kyaukse, a small town near Mandalay, Myanmar. It is a familiar sight to see people betting during festival time, even though betting and gambling is officially illegal in the country. However, in early 2009, the Democratic Karen Buddhist Army (DKBA) has started opening gambling venues in at least nine villages in Mudon and Thanbyuzayat Townships. The games are being run in areas where gambling had previously not been allowed. Local residents are concerned about the activity’s impacts on their communities. ‘Most of the villagers spend their time gambling. They are lazy instead of working”, said a woman from the Nyang Gone village.

ELEPHANT SKIDDING. Elephant skidding, an environmentally friendly method of logging, continues to play a vital role in the timber operations of Myanma Timber Enterprise (MTE), a state owned company given the monopoly by the Myanmar government to harvest, process and export teakwood. The company employs or sub contracts around 4,000 trained elephants to drag felled timber from the cutting area, such as Bagoyama reserve, to roads or rivers from where it can be transported out of the jungle. Myanmar has more elephant experts than any other Asian country and leads the world in elephant management, veterinary care and mahout skills.

Transportation takes on a whole other meaning in India. I wish I'd had my camera out for the men pulling carts loaded up with what must have been 2 tons of cooking oil...uphill. Luckily, the traffic jam gave kate the chance to snap this shot of an entire family (two women, two children, and one man) on one scooter. and notice the garlaned Ganesh-ji on the dashboard of the taxi?
