Across from Mosteiro dos Jeronimos is the Discoveries Monument. It was built on the north bank of the River Tagus in 1960 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the death of Prince Henry the Navigator, who is depicted on the prow. The monument is a pleasant stroll across the gardens fronting the monastery, and through an underpass . This is actually a replica of another monument that was made for the Portuguese World Exhibition of 1940.
The Torre was built during the age of the discoveries and used to be a defence tower. The decoration is in Manuel style, which means that there are lots of nature elements involved. When defence wasn't necessary anymore, the tower got other functions like a customs control point, a telegraph station, a prison and even a lighthouse. in 1983 UNESCO classified it as a "world heritage site." You can climb up the tower and have a nice view of the Belem surroundings.
