Did the Quad Bike trip up Bateman's Bay to Oyster Bridge where we stopped for an hours snorkel. Fantastic variety of fish, and while cruising along just metres off the beach I caught movement about 10 feet to my right. Turned to see a turtle checking me out. We swam parallel to each other for about 15 seconds before another snorkeller spotted the turtle and thrashed his way over to see it chuck a U-ey and bugger off.
Paradise beach is a 10 minute walk south of Coral Bay just past the lookout. The reef start about 20 metres from shore and is magnificent. Hard and darkish coral as opposed to the more colourful tropical coral, but the formations are works of art. Never seen a rose shaped piece of coral the size of a Toyota landcruiser before. One giant clam was in about 5 feet of water at the very start of the reef, and it was coloured jet black inside with very thin sworly lime green lines. The beach is probably 0.5 kms long and there were 8 people on the whole beach that afternoon.
There is a reef shark nursery about 20 minutes walk north along Coral Bay. Everyone walks slowly into the water till it's up to your knees, and you stand there with maybe 10 - 20 small reef shsrks swimming within 10 feet of you. Pretty cruisey, got some decent video of them, then some cretin jumped in with mask and flippers and scared them all away. Pity they didn't go for his dangly bits!!!
Aerial pic of Bateman Bay just round the point from Coral Bay. This is the 7 km beach we quad-biked. Saw two turtle trails leading to nests.
Flying to Exmouth on way to 4 day holiday at Coral Bay and took a pic as we flew past. That reef looks purty good. Coral Bay is a one street town? which is at the far left of the bay. The large turquoise ocean area to the right of the point is where the manta rays feed.
ANZAC Day March in Perth CBD.
At King's Park for the dawn service to commemorate the Australians fallen in war.
Stayed down the south end of Chaweng Beach at the Chaweng Resort, and decided to hire a scooter for 24 hours. The guy in this shop charged 200Bt for the hire and 200Bt to fill the tank. Took off for the south-east tip for lunch at the Simple Life villas (a nice spot). Got on bike to head for Nathon and it died on me outside the Snake Museum about half a km up the road. Had every man and his dog look at it, but no-one could work out what was wrong, especially with almost a full tank of petrol left. Called NCK Travel and the guy was very abrupt and almost abusive, saying that 'you must bring bike back and pay for transport', Cost me 800Bt for a local to throw it on the back of his ute and get us back to Chaweng. Parked the scooter outside the shop and went in to see what the story was. The office lady laughed in my wife's face when she said that an apology for the inconvenience would be appreciated. Went back to the shop about an hour later to see the manager, and he basically ignored us when we said that at least we should get our 200Bt hire payment back, having only been on the road for 3 hours out of 24, plus having to pay 800Bt to bring his dud scooter back. After quiet pressure from my wife, the ratbag threw a 100Bt note at her and marched her out of the shop (I was outside because I was ropable). Just as my wife reached the shop door she repeated her request for the full 200Bt as a refund, and the nasty little bugger tred to snatch the 100Bt out of her hand. If hiring a bike in Chaweng, do me a favour and DO NOT HIRE from NCK Travel, and don't use them for travel arrangements or use their PC's for netting. Your boycotting will be appreciated from afar.
Schwedagon from the 20th floor restaurant in the Sakura building, downtown Yangon. Costs $5 USD for a great 4 course meal and the views are fantastic.
Cycling back from the local festival at Ngapali Beach and came across these fishing boats in a creek about 200 metres from the sea.
From our balcony at the Royal Beach, and all the fancy resorts are up the other end of the beach from us.
Love air-con rooms when too bloody hot, but our room at the Royal Beach Motel? was great. A huge queens and a single bed if needed for Leaping Larry. The warm waters of the Bay of Bengal are less than 50 yards away, french doors onto the balcony open all night and you lie in bed with a gorgeous white mossie net enclosing your bed. Oh Bliss.
Is that an empty beach or what???
The variety and gorgeousness of Buddhist sculpture constantly amazes me.
Walked from our hotel (Thande) just on sunset to see this temple. Lots of locals arriving to pray, and the Burmese would have to be the friendliest peoples I have ever met.
Four nights in Bagan after boating down from Mandalay (and that was a total buzz), and it is awesome. Something like 2,000+ temples and stupas in the plain outside the ancient walls of Old Bagan. Most are something like 800 to 1,000 years old.
Full day trip to Inwa, Sagaing Hill and end the day with sunset at 200 year old teak bridge. Had an icy cold bottle of neck oil waiting for the show, and what a show it was. I have something like 30 pictures of the bridge with sunset behind it. Very relaxing walk over the bridge and back.
A lovely reclining Buddha in Bagan. Spot the Godhead.
The temples of Bagan have some of the most beautiful statues of Buddha I have ever seen.
Just one view of Bagan's 2,000+ temples and stupas. Every tourist goes to the white temple (centre left) for sunset, while I found one totally empty and avoided the mayhem and constant camera clicking. I did enough clicking on my own!!!
