Its simple. Sometimes a little to simple, because you cant cook anything that requires more than one pot or one burner. We eat lots of rice and pasta.
We tried desperately to name this gnome something relevant or witty, but we couldnt think of anything that fit. So his name is simply, Gnomie. He watches over our travels.
The most wonderful thing about traveling by van in New Zealand is that you can pull off wherever you want to have a nap or make a sandwich, and its almost always beautiful.
This seems much more our style than skydiving. No plummeting towards the earth wondering if your parachute is going to open. You just run off the edge of the mountain (sounds more harmless than jumping out of a plane) and peacefully glide down.
The ski hills here are strange - there are no trees and very few runs. I met a man from Colorado the other day who teaches yoga in Queenstown and he told me the skiing is crap because the wind blows everything around. That makes me feel better about missing NZ ski season.
It reminds me a lot of the bay area, windy, cloudy, and hilly.
The hike hurt much more coming down than going up.
Mt Ruapehu is the snow covered peak in the distance, then Mt. Ngauruhoe, and Tongariro is in the foreground. You can see part of the trail we hiked across.
Just for you, Pat
These lakes came out of nowhere just on the other side of the hikes summit.
Brody was excited because it looked a little like the entrance to Mt. Doom in Lord of the Rings.
Mt Ngauruhoe in the background. Its actually one of Tongariro's vents (as opposed to its own volcano) It last vented in the 1990's
This is where we sleep, eat, get dressed, play cards, etc. etc. Its not much, but its home.
This volcano turns into a ski area in the winter time
You can see Tongariro National Park in the background.
Outside Taupo. I wish there was someone or something down there to show you how massive they are.
These little guys were everywhere.
The food is steamed underground under a fire.
