CSS Hunley was a human powered submarine built by the Confederacy. Two crews of 9 men were killed during testing but a third crew took her to sea and sank the USS Houstatonic - the first successful attack by a submarine. Unfortunately the Hunley was also lost in the attack. Her wreck was discovered in Charleston harbour and was salvaged. It's undergoing treatment in the maritime museum of Charleston.
