This is before we got into the heart of the park.
Mom was surprised at how much grassland is contained in the Badlands area of South Dakota. Not enough to homestead, but enough for wildlife.
These were near the Sage Creek area (gravel road) in Badlands National Park, South Dakota
We drove through a couple of different "National Grasslands". I didn't realize there were area's designated as such. This sign was just as we turned off Hwy 44 to the County Road to go to the Badlands (neither of which were good roads).
We were surprised to find Cactus in South Dakota, there was actually quite a bit of it - especially near the Badlands.
While much of the area contained in Badlands National Park does contain prairie or patchs of prairie, sections of it area also like this.
The soil erodes so quickly in the Badlands that all the creeks we found were colored by silt
We were surprised to find patches of prairie grass in the Badlands, and where Bison or Deer can get to them, they go there to eat also
This is a 'primative' campgrounds on the edge of the largest protected wilderness area in the U.S.
