The original church on the site was built in the 1890s. It was badly damaged in a bombing raid in 1943. The present building, which consists of a church with an attached foyer and a separate belfry with an attached chapel, was built between 1959 and 1963. The damaged spire of the old church has been retained and its ground floor has been made into a memorial hall.

Entry to the glass dome on top of the Reichstag is free, and so going up there is a very popular activity with the tourists, often leading to near-endless lines. Pity the people standing in this particular line, as they had to deal with freezing wind, and not half an hour after the photo was taken, it started snowing.
Storm clouds racing by, I stood as mesmerized in front of Schloss Charlottenburg, waiting for those rare seconds when a break in the clouds would perfectly line up with the sun to make the building glow with a rare light. Nearly froze my fingers off, but it was worth every second of waiting.
