Pismo Beach is one of the areas along the California Coast where the Monarch Butterfiles migrate to overwinter.
The only food the larva, or caterpillars eat is milkweed.
The butterfiles congregate at the tops of Eucalyptus trees. The Monarch Grove in Pismo State Beach is one of the largest on the California Coast.

This is a Gulf Frittillary Butterfly, which are fairly common in the SE United States
