The gate design for this entrance to Kanazawa Castle is typical with a change of direction once through the first gate before hitting the second. Defences are improved with the presence of a moat around half of the building (there is an outer moat as well as other defensive walls).
For attack, a height advantage is obtained with views down to the moat, gate and outside walls.

Hirosaki Castle is unusual in the it has a triple moat configuration. This contributes to the large size of the park, but also to its aesthetic qualities.
