The tomb has 52 coffins for family members, mostly the young princes who were murdered upon Mahmut's death. For the first two centuries the Ottomans practiced fraticide as a means of avoiding civil war. The successful claimaint to the throne had all his brothers and male relatives executed upon his accession

Former Byzantine church
Orhan, the second Ottoman leader, was originally buried in a small Byzantine church next to his father. The two churches were toppled in an earthquake in 1855 and replaced with these tombs built to the same design

Richly decorated tomb for Prince Cem (and other family members). Cem escaped the assassins his brother sent to kill him and ended up living (and dying) in Naples.
