CGSP is 1 of 4 State Parks established in 1935. CGSP is 1608 acres in size at 4,800 ft (1,500 meters) elevation. CGSP gets snowfall most winters and summer thunderstorms are common.
1 million years ago the area was a freshwater lake. Over time, the water drained and the soft bentonite clay was eroded into the crevices, pinnacles & hoodoos by rainfall and snow melt.
Early in the 1900s, residents of Panaca and Caliente performed Shakespeare's play using the formations as a backdrop. They used the crevices as dressing rooms.
One of the many deep crevices found in CGSP.
Nice example of an eroded hoodoo.
