If you want to travel to Penang from Thailand you can take the train from Hualampong station to Butterworth. They only have 2nd class sleepers, which depart around 3pm and arrive around 12 noon Malaysian time. I found the train comfortable, but it is only about another 50 USD to fly. You do get to see more of the country by taking the train.

This photo is taken while sitting in a restored train carriage, looking out through at the carriage next to it and across the bay. The West Coast Wilderness Railway was recently restored, and takes passengers to and from Queenstown from Strahan. Up until the 1960s, the track was used by a mining company for transport to the port.

From Hualampong station you can get an overnight sleeper car for about 1200 baht to Nong Khai. You have to hire a tuk-tuk to get into Vientienne for about 300 baht. The visa for Loas is about 1000 baht or 30 USD and is well worth it.
