The layout of the Shinjuku gardens offers a lot of variety with aspects that are very Japanese and other areas where it has more of a European formal garden feel. Certainly the wide open areas and mature trees are an asset for this park.
This the Sanja Matsuri, where the locals carry their mikoshi, portable but very heavy shrines, to the Asakusa Temple, Tokyo. I loved seeing the enthusiasm as everyone joined in to lug in around a hundred shrines. But this particular one attracted more interest, followers and photographers than most. The clue to why, is the man you can see waiting for it; his tattoos indicate he is Yakusa, the Japanese mafia. So I had to wonder whether, in this instance, the prime motivation was devotion or duty?
The people of Hiroshima are incredibly supportive of their baseball team, despite the fact they they are terrible. We went along to watch a match, and the sense of community and enjoyment was immense. On this occasion, the home team even won, by the single run scored in the whole match! These red balloons were released right around the stadium.
The floating torii gate at Miyajima is one of the three views of Japan. A worthwhile excursion from Hiroshima and while it is very pretty on a sunny day, the mood during rain or foggy conditions makes it no less special. Choose the right time and you either see it reflected in the waters of the shallow bay, or at low tide walk to the massive gate itself.
