Suworow monument

A Russian monument next to the devil's bridge, for the memories of a battle that took place around here in 1799 between Napoleon and the Russians.

Devil's Bridge / Teufelsbrücke

The legend says that the devil built the first bridge here. As the locals failed to build a bridge in several attempts, one of them said "the devil should build a bridge here". So the devil appeared and offered them to build the bridge, in exchange for the first soul to cross the new bridge. They agreed and he built the bridge, but then they sent a goat across the bridge in front of the first person. The devil was so angry about being fooled that he grabbed a huge stone and wanted to smash the bridge, but an old woman marked a cross on it and he missed the bridge, throwing the stone down the valley. The "Devil's stone" is still further down the valley and had to be moved for 300.000 Swiss Francs when the new motorway tunnel was built.

From here it's a LONG uphill... the sign says "goes up 1560 m on the next 34 km" - and all that on a packed bike with around 25 kg equipment...
