The weather didn't cooperate and after spending 4 days in the area hoping to make the famous hike and do the Tongariro Crossing we decided to settle on a sunrise hike. It was lovely.
This is how we entertain ourselves. My goal was to sleep in each bunk bed throughout the course of the night as we had the whole room to ourselves. Unfortunately, I was too tired and just messed them all up by playing around. =D
Sure enough! The day we're heading out of the area, the weather clears and it's a perfect day to climb the mountain and do the crossing! Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
Oh, not only was it the wrong side of the road, it was dark, windy roads, in a hail storm -- plus we're tourists so we don't know where we're going in the first place! (probably why it says on their map that that road is off limit to tourists. of course, we didn't see that important piece of information until After we had driven that stretch!) Oh well! We're alive!
We picked up a total of four hitchikers on our travels around New Zealand. These two boys were from the States and were very nice to make up bread for giving them a lift a total of about 600 kilometers. We managed to cram 5 people and all our big bags into that little car. (not the best gas mileage on those windy roads as the tail of the car was about touching the ground!)
Didn't get to walk on the glacier like we wanted because of such terrible weather when we arrived, so instead we took a jog to this suspension bridge. It was a bit freaky to walk across as it was shaking and the water was rushing underneath so fast.
Waterfalls lined the sides of the mountains as we drove along the West Coast in the South Island. I wish the pictures were as beautiful as the real thing.
Four young 20's guys let us crash on old matresses at their place in Wanaka. We played spoons, good times.
