Painted in minute detail, the mythology and legends of Jainism. This place is a jewel in the middle of the murky chaos of Bikaner's narrow streets.
The word Haveli derives from breeze or wind. The roof tops provided alternative accomodation making best use of the breeze to keep cool in the heat of the summer. These grand, but in many cases crumbling, houses were built by merchants with the wealth coming from the trade in silk, opium, semi precious stone and spices. The houses we saw initially were painted from top to bottom with scenes from the Ramayana, local history and historic developments.
