The Blue Sky against the Black Rocky mountains of the Spiti Valley
The Massive Range of the Spiti Himamayas towers over the small flat-roofed houses in the small Tibetan village. Below the village flows the Spiti river. The village is on the opposite bank of the river between Kaza & Kee
The huge mountain range along the Spiti river has these fantastic columns & spurs created out of the continuous wind that funnels down the valley.
Dhankar Gompa (also Drangkhar or Dhangkar Gompa; Brang-mkhar or Grang-mkhar) is a Gompa, a Buddhist temple in the district of Lahaul and Spiti in India. It is situated at an elevation of 3,894 metres (12,774 feet) in the Spiti Valley between the towns of Kaza and Tabo. The complex is built on a 1000-foot (300-metre) high spur overlooking the confluence of the Spiti and Pin Rivers - one of the world's most spectacular settings for a gompa. Dhang or dang means cliff, and kar or khar means fort. Hence Dhangkar means fort on a cliff.
The Lahoul & Spiti Region is popularly called mini-Tibet, and as soon as we enter the region - we know why. The rough & arid landscape and the flat roofed tibetan houses is a beauty to behold.
Trek up to Edekkal caves
The Durga Temple at Kalpa is an ancient one. The wood carvings of the Main Temple, ant the Gates have a considerable Buddhist/Tibetan influence. The detail of the Dragon/Serpant on the Columns of the Gateway is an example of that. The Photograph shoe the Durga Temple with the Kinnaur Kailash Peak in the Background.
We were at Kalpa - above Rekong Peo. The sun was setting behind us, and there was dayligt only on the mountain tops. Kinnaur has a heavenly sunset.
