The Palacio Real, the Royal Palace was built during the 18th and 19th centuries. It is the official residence for the Royal family, but these days they only use it for state ceremonies. The rest of the time it’s open to the public. It replaced the former medieval Alcázar, which was burnt to the ground in 1794. The present day Royal Palace of Madrid was decorated to the tastes of Charles III, and is extremely lavish inside.
