The "Coonawarra" is a privately owned paddle steamer which is about 100 years old. There were originally dozens of these vessels on the Murray and Darling Rivers until the advent of the railways, which rendered them redundant. There are about a dozen now lwft.
This dry river bed can turn into a raging torrent without a drop of rain in the area. Rain can fall hundreds of miles away, and flood this area without warning. This happened a few months ago, and washed out all the roads for several weeks!
These birds are actually called "Apostle Birds", as they are regularly seen in groups of 12 or 13. They are also named "Happy Jacks" as they are very friendly and gregarious, and even share the egg warming in the nesting season!
