We were surprised at how quickly the Prairie disappears and the Badlands jumps into sight
This is more what we imagined the Badlands would look like in South Dakota, but there is a lot more prairie mixed in than we expected.
This was near Sage Creek Campground.
Where there is grass, animals (& man) will take advantage of it
The erosion in the Badlands is so fast all the creeks are silted and appear stained
The county road into the southwest side of the badlands is 25 miles of gravel, some washboard. My Rv could only do 5 - 15 mph
This is one of the exhibits on the Fossil Walk in Badlands National Park, South Dakota. A fairly large number of fossils has been found in this area.
The Fossil Walk in Badlands NP, South Dakota, is raised to prevent damage to the park. There are several turnouts (wide spots) where enclosed exhibits are located.

I was surprised to learn that Badlands National Park (NP) in South Dakota contains the largest protected wilderness area in the US.
This is before we got into the heart of the park.
