Salvador - Portugal in Salvador
The Portuguese Library of Salvador was established in 1863, as a cultural association of the city's numerous Portuguese inmigrants. Its current headquarters, located at Piedade Square, were inaugurated in 1918, in a gorgeous "neomanuelino" building, consisting in one of the prettiest examples of this architectural style outside Portugal. This pic shows a detail of the main façade: the statues of Pedro Álvares Cabral, navigator who "discovered" Brazil, in 1500, and Luiz de Camões, the most important classical writer in Portuguese language.

Salvador - Rio Vermelho & Pituba
Here is a partial view of modern Salvador, taken from Pestana Hotel, located in Rio Vermelho, an old fishermen's neighbourhood where big hotels and condominiums now abound. Pituba, one of the city's newer districts, can be seen in the background.

Salvador - Early morning in Salvador
This pic, taken from Blue Tree Towers Hotel, in the district of Rio Vermelho, shows a part of beautiful Salvador coastline at dawn: fishermen's houses contrasting with skyscrapers in Rio Vermelho, big hotels at Ondina Beach and, finally, Barra's famous Lighthouse.

Salvador - City Council
Here is another example of typical portuguese colonial architecture in Salvador: the City Council Palace, built in 1640. It is located in the very heart of Salvador Old Town (Upper Town), close to other impressive buidings.

Salvador - Rosário dos Pretos
Built along the XVIII Century by slaves and ex-slaves of African origin, the beautiful "Nossa Senhora do Rosário dos Pretos" Church dominates Pelourinho Square's landscape, in Salvador Old Town. Its baroque features mix the portuguese tradition with some indian influences, mainly in the towers.
