Dry River Bed, Mundi Mundi Plain, near Broken Hill, New South Wales

This dry river bed can turn into a raging torrent without a drop of rain in the area. Rain can fall hundreds of miles away, and flood this area without warning. This happened a few months ago, and washed out all the roads for several weeks!

a family of Happy Jacks

These birds are actually called "Apostle Birds", as they are regularly seen in groups of 12 or 13. They are also named "Happy Jacks" as they are very friendly and gregarious, and even share the egg warming in the nesting season!
